Rumors of Facebook Deal in China Fly Around the Web

Many rumors have been posted all over the internet today about developments between Facebook and Chinese search engine Baidu striking some sort of deal over a social networking site in China. Original reports stated that Facebook and Baidu had, in fact, agreed on and signed a deal to start a joint social network unrelated to Facebook specifically for the Chinese market. Facebook has been very vague when it comes to these rumors, telling one source “We are currently studying and learning about China, as part of evaluating any possible approaches that could benefit our users, developers and advertisers.”

The Facebook spokesperson would neither deny or confirm the news, so for now it can only officially be seen as a rumor, though it’s clear that many are hopeful that the deal will go through, as Baidu’s stock has already significantly risen.

Even if a deal is struck, the joint venture would have to be approved by the Chinese government, and even if it is both sides will then have to agree on staffing choices for the new company. If the deal goes through, it could be very beneficial to everyone involved, as Baidu is China’s most popular search engine, Facebook is by far the largest social networking site in the world, and China is the most populous country in the world, and home to the most internet users. If this joint venture site attracted the same percentage of the population that Facebook has so far in the U.S., they could gain over 530 million users.
