Happy St. Nicholas Day, Belgium!

Here is a great website that lists all of the traditional activities that take place for the holiday.  Here is a short breakdown:

  • -       The holiday is mainly for the children to celebrate.  Colorful parades with bands and banners are put on to greet St. Nicholas.

  • -       Much like the American Santa Claus, the Dutch Sinterklaas visits the children, bearing gifts if they’ve been good.

  • -       Chocolatiers all over Belgium (especially in Brussels) create beautiful window displays out of delicious chocolate for the holiday.
  • -       On St. Nicholas’ Eve (December 5th), children put their shoes outside the front door with treats for the saint’s horse (sugar lumps, hay, carrots) and a glass of wine for the saint.

  • -       In the morning, the children will find that their shoes have been filled with speculoos cookies, toys, marzipan, and other treats.

If you happen to be a Belgian expat in the states, specifically NYC, you can celebrate by finding the Waffle Truck and getting a free scoop of ice cream on your waffle!  (It’s easiest to find them by following their Twitter.)

Dating in New York City

Please follow Whereiskeku as she joins the wonderful world of dating.  Find out what's in store next.

Living in NYC is difficult to say the least. It’s full of people, trash, and taxicabs. Yet it’s the best place to find someone right? Wrong. Yes there are tons of people here but everyone is working their butts off to stay here so who has time to mix and mingle and really just woo? “Not I” said the rooster. So I decided to embrace the Edates and hope I find someone good. Decisions, Decisions. The first one up is match.com. I used to love those commercials. Those guys always seemed like someone I wanted to hang out with. So I open an account. Keep in mind when I made the account I decided to not put my best foot forward. I made sure to use a picture that didn’t show me in the best light and I also made sure that I was very clear and honest about who I was. Why do people find it necessary to lie in the beginning? I know all about using your best fly to catch the fish, but I am all about sitting there and letting the fish bit if they feel like it. I really am a fun person, so I am confident that if i am just truthful someone is out there that wants what I can offer. So with all that out there I start my search.

So here's to you New York, don’t fail me now.
