Ronaldinho Headed Home

Ronaldinho as a youngster at Gremio

Good news for all our Brazilian readers means bad news for our Italian readers today. World football superstar Ronaldinho has confirmed that he plans to transfer to his hometown team Gremio, based in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Ronaldinho started his career on Gremio’s youth squad from 1998-2001 before moving overseas to play for Paris Saint-Germain, and eventually for Spain powerhouse Barcelona. He was then signed by AC Milan in 2008, when he has played ever since.

Ronaldinho has stated his intent to turn down a three-year, £20m offer from English Premier League side Blackburn to return to Gremio. Radio Globo, a Brazilian media outlet, has stated that Dinho was in Rio de Janeiro meeting with AC Milan vice president Adriano Gallani to finalize his release from the club. He will then travel to Porto Alegre to sign a three-and-a-half-year contract with Gremio for an unspecified amount.

Though Ronaldinho has made up his mind, AC Milan is reluctant to let him out of his contract, and they are asking for an €8 million transfer fee. Dinho’s agent has been in talks with Milan’s managers and owners, and they will most likely come to an agreement that benefits everyone, as Milan will no longer have to pay Ronaldinho’s high salary and Ronaldinho will be able to return to his home city.

Two other Brazilian squads, Flamengo and Palmeiras have also made offers to Ronaldinho, but unless there is some type of problem in the talks with Gremio, these two teams will most likely be left searching for another star.
