Myanmar Activist is Free!

According to CNN, “Freed activist Aung San Suu Kyi pledged Monday to keep working toward restoring democracy and improving human rights in Myanmar, saying she is not concerned about being detained again in the future.” In her speech, she called the country Burma, even though it went through a United Nations-official name change in 1989.

Bono has called her the “[Nelson] Mandela of our moment.”

Though Suu Kyi has been on house arrest for most of the last two decades, the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize winner has done her best to keep in touch with the outside world. She had been listening to the radio daily to keep up on current events and has been reading a lot. She even has a fan page on Facebook! Check it out here! It has over 250,000 supporters and although she doesn’t have any social media pages of her own, she is considering either her own Facebook or a Twitter account.

Most political pundits and celebrities seem to take to Twitter more often than Facebook. Maybe because of the privacy issues? Or maybe a Twitter account is just easier to set up? Which do you think would be more effective?
