Brazil Looking for Pre-Salt and Gold

Brazil’s outgoing president, Lula da Silva forecast that they will become the world’s fifth largest economy by 2016.

Between the pending Olympic games and World Cup heading down to Rio in six years, and then the pre-salt oil deposits that have yet to be tapped, da Silva is confident that there will be a huge economic boom within the next few years.  He made this announcement yesterday during the review and achievements of his last 8 years in office.  Among the most notable of achievements was the eradicating of hunger and poverty through the food basket support program established during his presidency.

Besides the previously mentioned economy boosters, he discussed his successor, Dilma Rousseff.  He said that she has the know-how and the economic team to achieve even more than he has.  Education is on the top of the list; a literacy program, funding the universities is a main priority.  Maintaining a literacy rate of 92% countrywide is really important to them.  Lula also mentioned that Brazil now “publishes more scientific papers than Russia or the Netherlands.”

We are looking forward to seeing what Dilma does with the country – and even more excited about checking out both the Olympics and the World Cup in Rio!

As always, StanaCard’s rates to Brazil are some of the cheapest.  To call Rio de Janero from the USA right now is 3.99 cents per minute!  Click here for more information.
