While people in England are celebrating their triumph over Australia in The Ashes, there is a girl in Massachusetts who can’t stand the tournament or the people talking about it.
A week ago, Twitter was a-buzz with people discussing the match and looking for score updates. But instead of using the hash-tag (#) before “TheAshes,” quite a few people started tweeting with the @ symbol. @TheAshes happens to be a young mother who likes to knit. She also became annoyed with the attention and started replying to people saying, “I’m not a freaking cricket match!” “What the hell is a wicket?!” This spread around the Internet like wildfire. People began taunting her and telling her to use the attention properly. She seems to have abided. She even has a shirt now!
In the heat of the confusion, Vodaphone (the tournament’s sponsor) began the viral hash-tag of #gettheashestotheashes. They offered her a phone and tickets to the final. Quantas Airways joined in and offered her a flight!
Unfortunately, she isn’t going, but will be watching! #teachtheashestotheashes
Oh, the wonders of Twitter.
